Nestled in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, Harrisonburg is surrounded by some of Virginia’s most compelling history, including the Civil War. From preserved battlefields to hands-on museums, the region offers an array of ways to step back in time. Some of the most fascinating places to learn about Harrisonburg area history are only a short drive from Hotel Madison. During your next stay with us, learn more about the region’s past and learn something new by leaving room in your itinerary to visit some of these fascinating spots.

Explore Museums & History Centers

One of the best places to learn about the history of Harrisonburg and the Shenandoah Valley is a museum or history center. The Hardesty-Higgins House Visitor Center is a great place to start. Found in a historic 1853 home, this spot includes the Civil War Orientation Center and info on Valley battlefields. The visitor center is also where you can find the Valley Turnpike Museum, which focuses on the turnpike’s role in war history and regional development.

Other popular options include:

  • The Brethren & Mennonite Heritage Center: a place with exhibits on the Mennonite and Brethren settlers of the Shandnoah Valley

  • Harrisonburg Fire Museum: a small museum on the city’s firefighting history

  • Virginia Quilt Museum: a museum where you can learn about quilting heritage and cultural history

Visit a Civil War or Historical Site

This region is home to a number of places with Civil War significance, including several that are only about 30 minutes from Harrisonburg. The Cross Keys Battlefield, complete with interpretive markers and trails, is a key battlefield of the 1862 Valley Campaign. There’s also the Breneman-Turner Mill, a historic 1800s grist mill that served the war and has milling exhibits. Visit Longs Chapel, which is a post-Civil War African American school and church.

The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields mobile app is a great tool if you are looking to go on a day trip filled with exploration. It provides you with information, directions, and audio narration for the valley’s battlefields and museums.
