Shenandoah National Park is a must-visit for anyone planning a getaway at Hotel Madison. Stretching along the Blue Ridge Mountains, the park offers one of the best ways to explore this stunning spot: hiking its trails that wind through the park. With more than 500 miles of paths to choose from, finding your perfect route can be overwhelming. To help you plan your adventure, we’ve put together a list of the best hiking trails in Shenandoah National Park, organized by difficulty.

Before leaving the hotel, make sure you are wearing sturdy shoes, have plenty of water, and are dressed in layers for the changing mountain weather. You will also want a trail map or GPS since cell service can be spotty throughout the park.

Easy

  • Blackrock Summit is a one-mile loop that leads to a rocky outcrop with panoramic views of Massanutten Mountain and the Shenandoah Valley. This is a great, family-friendly option.

  • At just 1.4 miles round trip, Dark Hollow Falls Trail is the closest waterfall hike to Skyline Drive. The trail descends through the forest to a cascading falls tumbling over mossy rocks.

  • For a little bit longer hike, try the Turk Mountain trail. The 2.2-mile round-trip gains 690 feet of elevation, making it one of the easier summit hikes in the park.

Moderate

  • Chimney Rock is a 3.4-mile hike with moderate elevation gain. The trail passes through unusual rock formations and wildflower blooms.

  • The Hawksbill Summit via the Upper Hawksbill Trail is a 2.1-mile round-trip to the highest point in Shenandoah National Park. The 360-degree views from the summit are some of the best the park has to offer.

  • Found near the Thornton Gap entrance, Mary’s Rock via Panorama is a 3.4-mile out-and-back trail. This is one of the most photographed trails in the Park, especially when fall foliage blankets the valley below.

Strenuous

  • The park’s most famous and challenging hike is Old Rag Mountain. The 9-mile circuit is known for its rock scramble near the summit. A permit is needed to hike this trail between March and November.

  • If you’re hoping to avoid crowds, try the Rocky Mountain Trail. Found near the park’s southern section, the circuit climbs steadily to a rock outcrop with rewarding views.

  • At just under 10 miles, Riprap-Wildcat Ridge is a full-day hike. It takes you through lush forest and crosses multiple mountain streams.
